What Causes Joint Pain and How to Treat It?

If you started experiencing joint pain lately, there are many possible causes to consider. One of the most obvious joint pain causes is arthritis. Although this is not a surprising fact, it will pay to consider other possible causes of joint pain. For instance, severe elbow joint pain can be caused by arthritis but there are other more frequent causes than this.

The Different Causes of Joint Pain

For a person suffering from elbow pain, the possible joint pain cause is tennis elbow. Tennis elbow can affect anyone not just tennis players. It is just called this way because tennis players are highly prone to having severe elbow joint pain due to overexertion when playing. Those people who play a sport with a racquet like squash, badminton or table tennis can have tennis elbow. Moreover, people whose jobs are very demanding on the forearms can get tennis elbow too. Examples of these people are plumbers, painters, butchers, electricians and carpenters.

Another elbow joint pain cause is nerve entrapment. Nerve entrapment is easier to determine as a cause for the joint pain. How? If you feel a tingling sensation between the pinky and the ring finger, a nerve has been trapped. When there is nerve entrapment, added pressure on the trapped nerve can also lead to a feeling of numbness in the hand.

Septic arthritis and bone tumors are possible elbow joint pain causes but these are quite rare compared to nerve entrapment and tennis elbow. Arthritis may be a more major joint pain cause in other parts of the body than in the elbow. In addition, repetitive stress injuries can also cause joint pains. With the hands and arms performing the same task over and over again, joint pain is bound to happen.
Joint pain is also caused by a nutrient deficiency. If the body is not getting enough nutrients, joint pain will start to happen. Joints are high maintenance which is why having a healthy diet is essential.

How to Treat It?

Joint pain treatment varies. The most conventional treatment is physiotherapy but there are those who find success through taking pain relief medications. Aside from being advised to prevent using the painful joint often, some patients may be given corticosteroid injections. Unfortunately, not many people can afford the the physiotherapy while some are hesitant about having injections. What is the next option for them?
Aside from conventional treatments, people who suffer from joint pain can opt for natural remedies instead. Natural remedies include supplements, massage, rest, lifestyle change and healthy diet. Nerve entrapment is self-correcting which means that it can go away in time. If the person gets enough rest, the pain should go away by itself. However, there are rare cases when surgery is needed to reposition the nerve.
