Pain Medications: Normally NSAIDs and opioid analgesics are used for back pain conditions. These have comparable efficacy and potency; however opioid versions are supposed to be more powerful in giving relief back pain. These analgesics come with their own side effects and have to be taken with caution, preferably under supervision so as not to negotiate any complications.
Muscle Relaxants: In case the acute back pain is severe, doctors may prescribe muscle relaxants. In an acute back injury muscle spasms protects the back initially from further injury by preventing movement. But muscle spasms have also got the symptoms like causing pain, reducing the blood flow and delay healing. Muscle relaxants help reducing the stiffness and providing relief back pain.
Cold therapy: The cold therapy is good in acute inflammation and also distracts from the back pain. By Wrapping ice in a cloth and applying to area of back pain for 20 minutes in a break of four hours will be effective. After 4 or 5 days, heat can also be applied. If you have circulation problems or nerve damage you are not advised to use hot or cold therapies unless recommended by a physician.
Heat therapy: Do not apply direct heat to the area of inflammation. Heat applied to the back increases blood circulation and gives an soothing feel to the back, speeds healing and thereby helps the muscles to relax, thus causing relief back pain.
Deep Heating Rubs: Creams applied directly to the problem area stimulate the flow of blood to the applied area, creating surface heat. Mainly heat is a distraction from back pain. These are not to be used in conjunction with a heating pad or you may burn the skin.
Topical capsaicin cream: Capsaicin is an extract from red chili peppers that reduces a substance in the nerve endings that transmit pain to the brain. The effects are intensifying and can take 1 to 6 weeks of regular use to obtain the total effect. The benefits appears to add to the benefits of pain medications and anti-inflammatory medications.
Stress Management: The muscles of the back and neck are commonly affected due to stress. Stress alone can cause back pain. Not only does stress cause tensing of muscles which restricts blood flow (oxygen) to the tissues in the tensed area, but stress hormones are released that increases the perception of pain. Stress management by deep breathing, meditation helps in attaining relief back pain effectively.
Chiropractic Treatment
Chiropractors treat back pain by manipulating the spine to help restore normal range of motion in the spinal joints, taking stress off the surrounding soft tissues and providing relief back pain.
Massage Therapy
A professional massage therapist can relieve back pain by manipulating the soft tissues (muscles and tendons) to help relax tense back muscles and increase blood circulation to flush out waste products from the back muscles, and stimulate healing. Most of the people who are treated by massage therapists are able to achieve relief back pain.
